Leaving... on a jet plane

Our bags are packed, we're ready to go... but unlike John Denver, we do know when we'll be back again... end of August, ready to start new schools and new lives in Sussex after 3 years of expat living in Dubai.

Our trip to "North America" as Ted insists on calling it (just in case we find ourselves in deepest darkest Peru Paddington-bear style perhaps) has been planned as a breather during that magical window in-between jobs when you can't get stressed out about work. Instead, we thought we'd spend 4 weeks together as a family discovering the American Dream... going to the Met and the Smithsonian, walking through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, catching a ball game perhaps and eating obscenely large ice-cream sundaes after a super-size burger and chips. Our trip takes us from New York to LA and will require a good deal of driving (and one internal flight). And if four weeks of quality family time doesn't send Iain running gratefully back to the peace of his work desk, then I don't know what will!

The main reason for the blog is to combine updates of where we are with hopefully some of Iain's wonderful photography (technology allowing) to share with friends and family. Really can't promise it will be as witty, clever or moving as my brother's recent Trailwalker blog, but he did at least inspire me to use a little bit of techno to keep in touch.

Next blog will be from New York - insh'allah! (oops, wrong cultural reference - clearly some fast-track re-westernisation required!)

Em x

p.s. thank you to my sister-in-law Sara who set up this blog ages ago and who probably thought I'd forgotten about it. Admittedly she set it up so that I could keep in touch while in Dubai, but hey, better late than never.
